Surprise Humpback Whales in Canadian Water!

Kelly | M/V Osprey | Friday, August 2nd 2025 | 12:30 PM

It has truly been Humpbackapolooza here in the Salish Sea and today was no expectation. We took a left out of Friday Harbor, made our way up San Juan Channel and eventually into New Channel. During our entire transit up to Canadian water we treated to endless looks at jumping pink salmon! We eventually made our way past the scenic Turn Point Lighthouse (the most northwest point in the entire continental united states!) and into Canadian water. Not long after crossing the border we noticed blows along South Pender's shoreline! Two humpback whales traveled together, slowly moving north and deeper into the Canadian Gulf Islands. On of these humpbacks was identified as "Sea Bird" born in 2017. Not long after spotting the two humpbacks closer to shore, yet ANOTHER humpback pair surfaced in deeper water off our port side. We were treated to looks at humpback pairs on both side of our vessel! Each humpback throwing up their tail before embarking on a longer deeper dive. What a wonderful and rare surprise! Typically humpbacks travel solo, very seldom do we have a group of 4 in the same area!
