On the prowl

What a great show we got from the transient Orcas today! It's not everyday that we get to see these whales since they visit our area less frequently than the resident Orcas. The transient orcas dine on marine mammals like the harbor seals, harbor and dalls porpoise, sea lions and minke whales. Today they exhibited their hunting skills as we watched them circle a small island where harbor seals were hauled out. One female came very close to the island got right next to the seals and began to zig zag back and forth. It appeared she was attempting to create a wake and get them into the water. She lost interest when the seals didn't fall for it and moved over to the kelp beds where the rest of her pod was hunting. The seals on the island were all on high alert sitting up and eyes focused on the passing dorsal fins. We never did see the Orcas make a catch but it was an intense scene for awhile! We also stopped by whale rocks and were treated to the sight of 7 stellar sea lions sunning themselves!! As we moved out we could hear loud barks of one of the males. I felt like warning them....watch out I hear some transients are on the prowl!!
