The heat is here! We left Roche harbor as the sun was blazing, all of us on board appreciating the gentle breeze as the boat motored out of the harbor. We set our sights for Canadian water and made our way to Moresby Island. We soon spotted blows in the distance! 6 orcas identified as both the T124a’s and T86A’s including:

T086A/Eider — female, born in 1988

  • T086A4/Akia — female, born in 2016
  • T086A5/Siku — male, born in 2024

    T124A/Kittiwake — female, born in 1984

    • T124A6/Kasuun — male, born in 2016
    • T124A7/Kite — female, born in 2021

Mirrored families of 3 orcas each all similar ages! So cute to think of these two moms relating to each other over their near identical families. Very quickly after arriving on scene these orcas began milling in the same area likely after a harbor seal. Countless lunges at the surface followed by big splashes! All this commotion then slowed as the family appeared to enjoy their earned meal. As we often do see after a meal, they began to celebrate! A couple breaches from the youngsters, and lots of tail action! One individual repeatedly practicing his/her headstand, a behavior in which they slowly rise from the water vertical with their tail up. So rare and such a treat to witness every sequence of an orcas hunt- the chase, the meal and celebration afterwards! Unforgettable day on the water.
