The holiday weekend brought a full boat of guests aboard the M/V Osprey. We took a right out of Friday Harbor, made our way down San Juan Channel and eventually into the the Straight of Juan De Fuca. We had no time to waste, a group of 5 killer whales were spotted quite far from our current location. The drive out to orcas was absolutely gorgeous, clear skies, perfect weather and hardly any other boats around. Low hanging clouds hugged the mountain tops on the Olympic peninsula making the perfect PNW backdrop. Eventually, we made our way to the whales reported location and slowed the boat. Patiently we waited for the whales to surface. After 10 long minutes, dorsal fins appeared! This group was made up of 5 whales and included:
- T75B Pebbles 1994 F
- T75B2 Jasper 2015
- T75B3 Rubble 2017
- T75B4 Petra 2021
- T68 Yakataga 1970 F
The group stayed close together surfacing in a zig zag pattern. This is my second time seeing the T75b's traveling with T68. I'm so curious why this older female has joined up with this family! We will probably never know...there are so many mystery's surrounding these whales. After some amazing looks at this group of 5 we slowly started to make our way back to Friday Harbor. Our only stop on the way being the notorious Whale Rocks! Completely covered with Steller sea lions.
