Bigg's Killer Whales Hang with the Locals

Today was an extra special day because we were able to share our trip with the San Juan Island community. We set up a trip with Island Rec to get locals out on the water, and it is always such a joy! It was one of those trips where things seemed to “T” up perfectly- beautiful, warm weather, calm seas, sunny skies, crisp mountain views, and lots of wildlife right near home!

Heading south, we came across multiple Bald Eagles right away in addition to Pelagic Cormorants, Double Crested Cormorants, Rhinoceros Auklets, Common Murres, Surf Scoters, Common Mergansers, Harlequin Ducks, and many more! Near Goose Island, we saw Harbor Seals and a surprise visitor- a female Elephant Seal!

Continuing southwest, we met up with a family of Bigg’s Killer Whales that we see commonly, known as the T049A’s. This includes six orcas; the youngest one being born earlier this year! This matriline traveled even closer to home, where we were able to view them near South Beach!

Peeling off, we investigated a large bait ball to see what other wildlife was hanging around and found Harbor Porpoise feeding on the same schooling fish as all the birds. Shortly after, we snuck in near Whale Rocks to see (and smell!) the Steller’s Sea Lions- who were mostly tucked up on shore, conveniently as those same orcas swam by.

Heading back up San Juan Channel, we played Naturalist Trivia from the galley with all the kiddos on board, leading them to win ocean themed stickers for every question they answered correctly! This is one of our favorite activities we do when lots of kids are on board and really into ALL the Salish Sea has to offer. Already looking forward to our next trip, and grateful for a wonderful community to share this with.
