A Bigg’s Killer Whale T-Party near Discovery Island

Lauren | M/V Osprey | Thursday, May 8th | 2:00 PM

Today the M/V Osprey took a trip southwest. Aiming for Discovery Island off the coast of Victoria, British Columbia. First we took a right out of Friday Harbor and headed south into San Juan Channel. As we exited Cattle Pass we were greeted by a Steller’s Sea Lion munching on a fish. We cruised west through the Strait of Juan De Fuca and into the Haro Strait. Right before crossing into Canadian waters we witnessed several harbor porpoise surfacing on the port side of our vessel. We slowly made our way towards Discovery and started seeing fellow whale watching vessels in the distance. As we got closer, several dorsal fins came into view! We were in the midst of a T-Party! Members from three different Bigg’s Killer Whale matrilines were all traveling together. We had whales from the T065B’s, T124D’s and the T100s! 12 whales in total. With several calves under the age of three, it was quite the sight to see. After some time, the T065B’s had split off from the rest of the group, so we decided to catch up with them on our way back east. After getting some fantastic looks at this young family we headed back to Friday Harbor.
