7 Orca Whales Enjoy the Windy Day

Stanley

Kelly Klein | M/V Osprey | June 9th, 2026 | 12:30pm

Unusually high winds for June here in the San Juan's was not going to stop us from seeing whales! We hastily left Friday Harbor, took a left and continued north up San Juan channel. Slipping into Presidents Channel and eventually Boundary Pass we spotted dorsal fins in the distance. 7 Killer whales total including:

  • T123/Sidney — female, born in 1985
    • T123A/Stanley — male, born in 2000
    • T123C/Lucky — female, born in 2012
    • T123D/Darcy — female, born in 2018
  • T124A4/Sabio — female, born in 2010
    • T124A4A/Strix — female, born in 2021
    • T124A1A*/Sabine — female, born in 2024

A benefit to the high winds we were experiencing is that with every surface we were treated to better looks at the orcas full body. As the waves dipped down around them we were able to see every eye patch and the full saddle patches. It appeared that the orcas were playing in the wind chop! We watched them roll at the surface and even one epic spyhop! It was well worth braving the wind to have these incredible looks at this group of 7 Orcas!
