Humpback Whale Tails

[Saturday, 5/19/18 - M/V Kestrel - 2:00PM - Naturalist Erick]

For our afternoon trip, Captain Gabe and I took Kestrel north once again. We stopped to see some great Harbor Porpoises swimming in the rips off of Green Point! Next, we headed through Boundary Pass and stopped at East Point to look at all the super cool Steller Sea Lions, Harbor Seals, and Bonaparte’s Gulls resting, swimming, and feeding in this dynamic area called Boiling Reef. We continued up north along the Belle...

Early Morning Wildlife

[Saturday, 5/19/18 - M/V Kestrel - 10:00AM - Naturalist Erick]

This Saturday, Captain Gabe and I took an early morning group out to go search for fun wildlife in the Salish Sea. Aboard Kestrel in our exposure suits we jetted off at around 26 kts to start our search. We headed north in San Juan Channel and made our first stop at Green Point. This normally is a favorite haul-out for Steller Sea Lions during the winter months but as we are quickly approaching summertime most of them...

Humpbacks at Sunset!

This past evening we all boarded M/V Sea Lion for the first official Sunset Whale Watching Trip of the season!  Myself and Captain Mike were both excited, as this is such a beautiful time to be on the water.

When we initially headed out, there were no firm reports about what was happening on the water, but Captain Mike had an awesome game plan, and it certainly paid off!  We headed east towards Rosario Strait, and within minutes of being in search mode, we spotted two humpback...

Three Humpbacks, Three Breaches, One Stunning Tour

Sunday, May 20th | M/V Kestrel | 10:00 AM

This morning the Kestrel powered up and took off north into San Juan Channel. Led by Captain Gabe, myself and our group of guests explored the waters between the Wasp Islands and up into President Channel before arriving at Patos Island to get a magnificent view of the lighthouse which marks the northernmost point of the San Juan Islands and the division of the east and west passages along the archipelago. The lighthouse has been in operation...

Exploring the World of a Humpback Whale and other Marine Wildlife in Canada!

Saturday, May 19th | M/V Sea Lion | Noon

On this sunny May day Captain Mike, naturalist Rachel and I headed north with a great group of folks, up through San Juan Channel and Boundary Pass, searching the Canadian waters under South Pender and Saturna Islands. We got all the way over to the east side of Tumbo Island, part of the Southern Gulf Islands, where we spotted a humpback whale traveling northwest along the coast.

When we saw this behemoth’s flukes we could tell it was a BCX...

Zigging and Zagging with a Humpback near Plumper Sound

Thursday, May 17th | M/V Sea Lion | Noon

Pushing off the docks in Friday Harbor this afternoon, Captain Mike took the Sea Lion to the north, toward Spieden Island, where we found a few remaining Steller’s sea lions lounging on Green Point, savoring the last seconds of laziness before making the trek to Alaska for their breeding season.

Moving through New Channel and up John’s Pass we spotted quite a few bald eagles perched on trees and soaring overhead! We continued up through...

Killer whales and Humpback Whales! A perfect day! [Friday, May 18, 2018]

[Sarah – 05/18/2018 – M/V Kestrel – 2:00pm]

Welcome home Captain Gabe! On Captain Gabe’s first trip of the season we had an amazing day! M/V Kestrel never fails to impress me with her range on a 3-4 hour trip. Friday’s afternoon Adventure Tour was a great example, just of what that boat can do.

We left the dock with no firm reports of whales in our area, by the time we were in the mouth of Friday Harbor a boat had called in… Orcas! We left the harbor cruising north through San Juan...

Humpback Whale and Orcas in the Salish Sea - Sunday, May 13, 2018

[Sarah – 05/13/2018 – M/V Kittiwake – 12:00pm]

Mother’s Day, and it was my first trip on M/V Kittiwake for the year! I love taking groups out on our smallest boat, because I really get to know the folks onboard, and we can tailor the trip to a smaller group’s needs. Captain Pete and I left the dock with no reports of whales in the area, so we decided to embark on our own search pattern. Soon into our trip we got a report of a humpback whale in the Strait of Georgia and decided to...

BCX1210 "Slate" the Humpback [Saturday, May 12, 2018]

[Sarah – 05/12/2018 – M/V Sea Lion – 12:00pm]

We had a lovely day out on the water full of wildlife and enlightening ecological discussion. Leaving the dock we steered the M/V Sea Lion north through San Juan Channel towards the Canadian Gulf Islands. We took a break in our journey north to check out some Steller’s sea lions hauled out on the rocks at Green Point, before pressing further on in our journey. Communicating with all of the other boats on the water, we decided to take an...

Welcome Home Patch!

M/V Sea Lion- 5/18

Our trip today on the water was absolutely amazing! We started out the trip on a sunny Friday afternoon, anxiously boarding MV sea lion to see what the day had in store.  Our first stop was to check out some stellar sea lions who will be getting ready to head up to Alaska soon.  After hanging out with these sea lions for a bit, we continued out into --- to see what else we could find.  As we continued out into the open space in between we excitedly saw a blow off...
