Guests aboard Kestrel along with Cpt. Gabe and I were excited to get on the water with two great reports already within our reach. Headed out the harbor, we decided to go south towards Victoria, where a report of transients, not yet ID’ed, had been picked up. Taking the challenge and curious to see who these animals were, we quickly went down San Juan Channel.

This Sunday in September sure felt like fall. Capt Gabe, Jordan, and myself headed out with a great group of passengers into the rainy blue Salish Sea. Most people visit this area in the summer, which is beautiful here. The temperature is usually super pleasant, the sun is up for a very long time, and there is usually not a rain cloud to speak of. The rest of the year though, it looks like it did today - very misty, cool, breezy, and rainy. We ventured off into the Pacific...

Leaving the harbor aboard Kestrel with Captain Gabe headed North to check out some transient orcas in our area. Although a bit rainy out, the visibility was good and the sun was already trying its best to shine through. Out of the harbor, we headed north up San Juan channel to later get to Spieden channel where the sighting currently was.

[Friday, 9/7/18, M/V Kestrel]

On Friday, Captain Mike and I took a group out to look for some amazing wildlife in the Salish Sea. We headed north towards the outer islands of the San Juan Islands. As we cruised north we saw a lot of Harbor Porpoises darting through the eddies around Green Point. Next, we headed further north. We headed around East Point where there is a a large number of pinnipeds! Pinnipeds are the seals, sea lions, and walruses of the world. Here we only have seals...

Guests aboard M/V Sea Lion along with naturalist Jordan, Captain Gabe and I were ready to get out on the water on this beautiful September day! After a smokey August, September was starting out pleasantly- sunny and warm days. After around three weeks of not seeing the southern residents in our waters, they had finally came back in. Gosh! We missed them!

Fall… The crisp sunny days, the approaching of scarf weather, and of course Pumpkin Spice everything… It is a gorgeous time of the year, and while coming to the San Juan Island any time of year is an absolute must, Autumn tends to be an especially gorgeous time of year out.  The trees begin changing color, quintessential overcast morning weather returns, and the days are still long enough to get out and enjoy!

Just because Autumn is approaching doesn’t mean there is any less to see...

Yesterday’s Adventure Whale Watch was a great reminder of why I love September so much out here in the San Juans. We had so much wildlife to look for and had great encounters with whales!

Yesterday guests aboard M/V Sea Lion were treated to the trifecta!  As we were heading out Captain Gabe, Naturalist Erick and myself were all excited to hit the water!  It was a beautiful sunny afternoon, the smoke from the BC fires in weeks prior had since cleared, and it was a perfect day!  To top it off we even had reports of orcas in our range… and not just any orcas, they were Southern Resident Killer Whales (SRKWs)!  As Captain Gabe shared this...
