June Brings the Heat, Killer Whales & Much More!

Kelly | M/V Kestrel | Sunday, June 8th 2025 | 2:00 PM

Our first truly HOT day of the season! A perfect day to be on our high speed vessel the M/V Kestrel. We quickly made our way interisland, following the ferry route past the mouth of East Sound and eventually into the open Rosario Straight. Our first stop was for harbor seals scattered about Peapod Rocks, lounging in the hot sun. Next, we continued North East investigating a report of 7 Killer whales identified as the T124B's. When first...

Multiple matrilines of Bigg’s Killer Whales socialize near Patos Island

Lauren | M/V Osprey | Wednesday, June 4th 2025 | 12:30 PM

We started our Classic Whale Watch & WIldlife Tour off by taking a left out of Friday Harbor and heading north into San Juan Channel. Our first stop was to McConnell Island to view two bald eagles perched high up on a tree top. We made our way into Spring Passage and then northeast into Presidents Channel. As we made our way towards Rosario Strait we were greeted by gorgeous views of Mount Baker. We then traveled to the northwest point of...

Breaching Bigg’s Killer Whales near Sucia Island!

Lauren | M/V Osprey | Friday, May 30th 2025 | 12:30 PM

We are three months into the 2025 whale watching season here in the San Juan Islands. Three months in, and today was the first trip all season that my guests and I observed breaching killer whales! What an absolute treat this trip was. We left the dock with a loose plan of heading northwest to catch up on a report of a humpback whale over in the Haro Strait. Not long after heading that way we got an exciting update: A large group of killer...

An Iconic Humpback Whale Hangs with Her New Calf in the Strait of Georgia!

Olivia Esqueda | May 29th, 2025 | M/V Osprey | 12:30pm

What a fun day out exploring in the Salish Sea! We spent the afternoon up north in the Strait of Georgia hanging out with Big Mama [Humpback Whale, BCY0324] and her new calf! While this is her 8th known calf, she is also a grandma AND great-grandma!

Big Mama is one of our favorites out here and who we tip our hat to for the comeback of the Humpback Whales in the Salish Sea. After being heavily whaled out of this area, there were no more...

2 Killer Whale Families Group Up & Swim Past Patos Lighthouse

Kelly | M/V Osprey| Monday, May 26th 2025 | 2pm

We took a left outside Friday harbor and were instantaneously treated to a look at a bald eagle sitting in the trees by Friday Harbor Labs. This area always seems to be a hotspot for these impressive raptors. I wouldn't be surprised if there is a nest close by, tucked away in the evergreens. We stopped for some quick looks at harbor seals lounging on the rocks next to Jones Island, always delighting us with there ever so elegant sausage bodies.

Many Bigg's (Transient) Killer Whales Socialize in Rosario Strait

Olivia Esqueda | May 19th, 2025 | M/V Osprey | 2:00pm

Today was one of my favorite days all season as we traveled interisland over to Rosario Strait to view Bigg’s [Transient] Killer Whales! And not just one matriline, but a combination of four! We saw a T-Party [“T” for Transient!] that was socializing and traveling around together. These 11 orcas included individuals from the T100’s, T124A2’s, T49A2, and T124D’s. The eldest among these whales was born around 1979 and the youngest was born just...

Bigg's Killer Whales Linger in Spieden Channel

Olivia Esqueda | May 18th, 2025 | M/V Osprey | 11:00am

Today was one of our favorite days out on the water, as we were joined by many of our own community members! Not often do we have the pleasure of leaving the dock with a reported whale sighting, but right before we boarded passengers, there were Bigg’s Killer Whales found in Spieden Channel, just north of San Juan Island. We left the dock and headed north, with the wind trying to steal our hats and the sun kissing our cheeks. Not long after...

Humpback Whale Foraging in Rosario Strait

Olivia Esqueda | May 3rd, 2025 | M/V Osprey | 12:30pm

It was such a neat experience today with a Humpback Whale east of the islands! We traveled inner island passing heaps of birds, including many Rhinoceros Auklets before reaching Rosario Strait, which is the first big body of water you cross when heading to Friday Harbor on the WA State Ferry. We were able to spot a Humpback Whale [CRC-19888 named Schooner] foraging along the shoreline with half a tail fluke! This whale was first spotted in...

4 Bigg’s Killer Whales and a frenzy of Bonaparte's Gulls

Lauren | M/V Osprey | Wednesday, April 30th | 2:00 PM

Today’s Classic Whale Watch & Wildlife Tour took a lengthy trip north up into the Strait of Georgia! We began our tour by departing Friday Harbor and aiming for Presidents Channel. On our way to Presidents we slowly cruised by McConnell Island to look at a bald eagle perched high up on a tree top. We continued northeast and got a glimpse of some harbor porpoise surfacing between Waldron and Orcas Island. We made our way through Boundary Pass...

Rainy Afternoon with Bigg's Killer Whales in the Strait of Juan de Fuca

Olivia Esqueda | April 28th, 2025 | M/V Osprey | 2:00pm

Despite the PNW spring rain, today’s trip turned out to be so much fun! We were able to spot many birds as we traveled down San Juan Channel into the Strait of Juan de Fuca, admiring Cattle Point Lighthouse along the way. After searching through the misty backdrop, we spotted the T065B’s- a matriline of Bigg’s Killer Whales.

This ecotype of orca feeds on marine mammals and is commonly found in the greater Salish Sea area. We are very...
