J pod Orcas Fish at False Bay [Naturalist Erick - 9/9/18 - M/V Sea Lion - Noon]
This Sunday in September sure felt like fall. Capt Gabe, Jordan, and myself headed out with a great group of passengers into the rainy blue Salish Sea. Most people visit this area in the summer, which is beautiful here. The temperature is usually super pleasant, the sun is up for a very long time, and there is usually not a rain cloud to speak of. The rest of the year though, it looks like it did today - very misty, cool, breezy, and rainy. We ventured off into the Pacific...

Land and Water Wildlife!| 9/8/18| 10AM
Leaving the harbor aboard Kestrel with Captain Gabe headed North to check out some transient orcas in our area. Although a bit rainy out, the visibility was good and the sun was already trying its best to shine through. Out of the harbor, we headed north up San Juan channel to later get to Spieden channel where the sighting currently was.
A smooth ride up to spieden channel, when arriving on scene we could see some dorsal fins hugging spieden island in the distance. Covered by...

Bigg's Orcas Hunt Seals in the Strait of Georgia [Friday, 9/7/18, M/V Kestrel]
[Friday, 9/7/18, M/V Kestrel]
On Friday, Captain Mike and I took a group out to look for some amazing wildlife in the Salish Sea. We headed north towards the outer islands of the San Juan Islands. As we cruised north we saw a lot of Harbor Porpoises darting through the eddies around Green Point. Next, we headed further north. We headed around East Point where there is a a large number of pinnipeds! Pinnipeds are the seals, sea lions, and walruses of the world. Here we only have seals...

Massive T-Party in the Strait of Georgia with Bigg’s Orcas as Far as the Eye Can See! | 8/30/18 | 1:30 PM
[Piper | 8/30/18 | M/V Sea Lion | 1:30 PM]
Today, Captain Gabe, Naturalist Mariana and I boarded the Sea Lion with a great group of guests and headed north from Friday Harbor, all the way up into the Canadian waters of the Strait of Georgia. It took a little while to get there but it was so worth it because when we arrived, we found five families of Bigg’s killer whales, made up of 20 or so orcas, socializing and traveling south. These orcas were lobbing their tails and spy-hopping...

Transient orcas in the Strait of Georgia
August 28- M/V Sea Lion- 1:30 pm
Yesterday we left the dock at Friday Harbor and went North towards British Columbia. We came across a few families of transient orcas, specifically the T100’s and the T124D’s. In total we had 8 whales milling about in the Strait of Georgia. Those families include a nice variety of individuals from a sprouting male to a young juvenile. The whales were in two groups and moving very erratically, which can be somewhat difficult to maneuver around to...

Young Transient Orcas Hunting Near Lopez Island 8/24/18 | 1:30 pm
Guests aboard M/V Sea Lion along with the crew had quite a day today! Heading out Naturalists Eric, Captain Gabe, and I were struggling to decide what group of orcas to go watch! There being a couple of reports of whales nearby from other boats, we decided to go through Upright Channel to the north side of Lopez to encounter a group. There were two young transient orca in this group traveling apart from their pod, which was further southwest. This was not typical behavior of two...

Jpod- always a pleasure| 8/18/18| 1:30 PM
It was a beautiful day to be out on the water and even better, Jpod had just came in yesterday after a few days of being gone. Captain Pete, naturalist Rachel and I️ were really excited to get out on the water although a very chilly day for August and a bit rainy. As we left Friday harbor, there were reports of the orca on the west side moving up the San Juan coast, so we decided to round the northern tip of the island and head south to encounter them.
Headed up the San Juan...

Transient Orcas hunting close to shore in Rosario Strait [Friday, 8/17/18, M/V Kestrel]
[Friday, 8/17/18, M/V Kestrel]
On Friday, Captain Mike and I took Kestrel out for two trips with great folks on each one. On M/V Kestrel we go extremely fast so we can cover lots of water to look for the coolest wildlife in the Salish Sea. We headed out and on our first trip we ended up on the east side of Orcas Island in Rosario Strait. It was a group of Transient Orcas (Killer Whales)! We also call this type Bigg’s Orcas. They are the type of Orcas that we see in the inland sea...

[Thursday, 8/16/18, M/V Sea Lion Noon & 5:30PM]
On Thursday, the M/V Sea Lion had two wonderful trips out on the Salish Sea. Naturalists Sarah and I on both trips took great groups of people out. On our first trip we saw a bunches of Harbor Seals swimming around and resting on rocks on Whale Rocks in Cattle Pass. Then we went to Lawson Reef in Rosario Strait and saw a group of Transient (Bigg’s) Orcas. These orcas are the ecotype that live on the west coast of North America that...
