Bigg's Killer Whales near San Juan Island

Golden Sunsets Silhouetting Black and WHITE Killer Whales

Olivia | July 31st, 2019 | M/V Sea Lion | 5:30pm

This evening, the whales made our job very easy! Captain Pete and I brought our passengers around the northern side of San Juan Island, through Spieden Channel, and down towards Lime Kiln. Prior to getting there, we spotted the same family group of Bigg’s Killer Whales that we saw south of San Juan Island earlier that morning. The T46B1’s were feeding right outside of Mosquito Pass and comprised of three individuals, including the...

Bigg's Killer Whales in the Sunny Salish Sea

Olivia | July 30th, 219 | M/V Sea Lion | 1:30pm

This afternoon we had a full boat of wonderful passengers. Captain Gabe, Co-Naturalist Laura, and I talked about how much we loved everyone we chatted with and had such a variety of backgrounds on board. We set out north through the San Juan Channel towards Boundary Pass. We were lucky enough to leave the dock today with a potential whale report that was north of Saturna and heading southeast towards Tumbo and East Point.

On our way to...

Humpback and Orcas in the Strait of Georgia!

Jordan | M/V Kestrel | 07/30/19 | 11:00am

Today, Pete and I took the Kestrel out of Friday Harbor up towards the north, just scanning around all the different islands to find some wildlife.

As we boated up through the San Juan Channel, we stopped by White Rocks to view some harbor seals! These chunky, floppy animals basked in the sunlight and enjoyed napping as the tides slowly approached their rocks.

We continued onwards up into Canadian Islands. We crossed Boundary Pass and entered...

Orca Whales In the Strait of Georgia!

Jordan | M/V Sea Lion | 07/29/19 | 1:30pm

What a lovely day out on the water! I really enjoyed talking with all my guests. They were a great group.

Captain Sarah, Naturalist Alexandria and I took our vessel, the Sea Lion, out of Friday Harbor and sped up through the San Juan Channel.

We boated up towards this little island near Waldron Island and spotted tons of seals! These harbor seals lounged lazily amongst the wet rocks and snuggled up against each other as they fought the rising...

Orcas and Minkes and Stellers Down South!

Jordan | M/V Sea Lion | 07/28/19 | 1:30pm

Today was magical! So many exciting things happened.

Captain Sarah and I headed out of Friday Harbor, down the San Juan Channel and towards Cattle Point.

We stopped by this small island called Whale Rocks and found some Steller sea lions! I was incredibly excited to see these huge marine mammals because they’ve been up in Alaska for their mating season for most of the summer! They lumbered around the island as their harbor seal cousins...

Abundant Wildlife in the San Juan Channel and Boundary Pass

Erin | M/V Sea Lion | Saturday, July 27, 2019 | 5:30 PM

It was a lovely evening of viewing wildlife around the Salish Sea. The Salish Sea attracts so many different types of wildlife because of the amount of productivity that occurs. This productivity creates phytoplankton and allows for the whole food chain to be present, especially throughout the summer months. Our first wildlife sighting was at Flattop Island. Flattop Island is northeast of Spieden Island, and it is designated as...

A Humpback Whale in the Strait of Georgia!

Erin | M/V Sea Lion | Saturday, July 27, 2019 | 1:30PM

It was a lovely afternoon in the Salish Sea. We began our trip heading north out of Friday Harbor. We headed up San Juan Channel and got some great views of the surrounding islands as we made our way toward Boundary Pass. As we went up the channel, we saw many harbor porpoises coming up to the surface as they travelled. Harbor porpoises are one of the smallest porpoises in the world. They can dive to depths of 400 feet and hold...

Humpback in Strait of Georgia!

Jordan | M/V Kestrel | 07/27/19 | 11:00am

The sun shone brightly overhead as Captain Gabe and I took the Kestrel out of Friday Harbor. Upon speaking with other captains, we headed north towards Canadian waters.

We sped up north through the San Juan Channel and up around Speiden Island. Here we found a huge bald eagle! He perched in the tree balanced precariously among the branches. He surveyed the water for any fish to feed on or any birds to steal food from.

We also stopped by some...

3"H's": Humpbacks, Harbor Seals and Harbor Porpoise!!

Laura C. | M/V Sea Lion | 7/25/2019 | 1:30pm

Today was a beautiful day on the water!  Our vessel Sea Lion headed far north with morning reports of some cool whale sightings!  After a picturesque journey surrounded by Canadian mountain views and Mount Baker in the distance, we saw a dorsal fin way out in the distance.  It was the fin of a humpback whale moving sleekly through the glass calm water!

We stayed with this humpback for quite a while and watched her take 4-5-minute dives...

Piper | Wednesday, July 24th, 2019 | M/V Sea Lion | 1:30PM & 5:30PM   Both of our Classic tours today aboard the M/V Sea Lion headed north into San Juan Channel and eventually made our way to the wonderful Canadian waters of the Strait of Georgia, just north of Saturna Island where we enjoyed views of Mount Baker near Bellingham, the Vancouver skyline, and Point Robert's, a funny section of the US that hangs off of Canada!    We also got to witness the majesty of an awesome humpback...
