Such a Grayyy-t Trip!

M/V Sea Lion | Naturalist Alexandria | Saturday, August 10th

What a grayyyyy-t day we had today.  We boarded onto the boat and started our trek out of Friday harbor.  Within a few minutes we received a report of a gray whale spotted of Whidbey Island.  We headed south down San Juan Channel and stopped after making it through Cattle Pass to check out some Steller Sea Lions that have just returned to the area after spending their summer up in Alaska.

After spending a fun time watching those Steller Sea Lions we started heading East towards Whidbey Island.  We had a gorgeous look at some harbor porpoise that were swimming by as we worked our way out towards the gray whale.

Once we were on scene we realized that this whale was in only about 10-20 feet of water, which meant that we got some fantastic looks at the whale while they were munching on the bottom of the shoreline.

Gray whales love mucky, nutrient dense waters, so this whale looked to be very happy hanging out just feet off the shoreline! We hung out with them for a while later, watching this fun behavior, before we had to begin the trek back to Friday Harbor.

What a fantastic time we had!  Dare I say this trip was simply grayyyyy-t!

Until Next Time,
