Welcome to San Juan Safaris

About Us -
Meet the Owners

Blitzen. Handsome, intelligent, good with people, a composting machine. Type: Nubian
Born:1997 A Christmas gift from my husband, Bill.

Best gift yet. A goat is the cheapest, funniest entertainment a person could have. I highly recommend you run out and get yourself one right now.

These are two of our five llamas. They are about to sniff this mature bald eagle in our yard. Moments ago, there was a second eagle. It did not enjoy being sniffed.
Pictured here is Sweet Pea and daughter Isabella.

This is Gretta (standing) and Pate. Gretta has only been with us about since 1999. She cost us about $100 by the time we flew her in as a gosling (don't ask, ok ask). Pate has been with us about Since 1988. She attended our wedding. Ok, she was present on our farm when we were getting married. Every spring the two of them get "crazed" with egg laying, nest sitting, territory protecting fever. Pate follows our llama Blizzard around (he is white and was born in a snow storm) all spring. It is love. And it is pathetic.

Not pictured; Bootsa Bootsa Columbus (Bootsa for short)(note:Bootsa Boo pasted away in 2003), she is a rabbit, Rose, Camille, Blizard - llamas, Ida, Zito, Buffy and Mr. Buffy- Zebra Finches (Buffy &Mr Buffy passed away in 2002).

Then there is us. Bill and Colleen. Bill spent 15 years in Alaska. He started Alaska Wildland Adventures (maybe you have heard of it?) about 25 years ago. He made a lot of waves in Alaska. Many firsts were done by Bill.

First to have a commercial rafting operation on the Kenai River, first to obtain permits, promoted fly fishing and spearheaded catch and release. He also promoted the notion of non-consumptive use of wildlife.

Bill is still a proud partner with Kirk Hoessle, Alaska Wildland Adventures.(Kirk has become a national spokesman for eco-tourism and sustainable tourism). From Alaska, Bill moved to Hawaii (Kona) where he ran a whale watching operation. That is where we met.

From the time Bill was a little kid; he knew he wanted to be out in nature, to be a park ranger. Ranger he was, Superintendent, Chugach State Park, 1/2 million acres, ran the Youth Conservation Corps for the state of Alaska. Along with bunches of other projects and positions.

My accomplishments pale compared to Bills outdoor background. I have been a late bloomer most of my life. Becoming a "naturalist" (I use this term loosely as a naturalist in the true sense knows all animals, all plants etc, whereas I know mostly just this region) started only a couple of decades ago. I have enjoyed many fields; hold a degree in gemology and music? And never know what I will be required to become proficient at next. That is the way it is when you own your own business. Keeps it very interesting.

We love what we do. We live it, breath it, dream it. We love the type of people that this business brings us in contact with. Our staff is of particular joy to us.

I am going to stop here. You probably feel like "too much information" already. Thanks for reading this. As I sign off to friends and staff...over and out!

Colleen

This photo was taken on Mount Young (across the road from British Camp). In the background is Wescott Bay and Roche Harbor.
