May 31, 2005 5:24 Naturalist Brent just told me they saw J pod (sprouter Black Berry was there too) who were spread out over waters from Eagle Cove to the Lime Kiln lighthouse. The morning started out sprinkling, but the afternoon opened up to gorgeous blue skies.
May 30, 2005 Both boats, Roche Harbor &Friday Harbor saw lots of whales today. They were hanging out toward the south end of the island. Lots of excited people coming off the boats.
Last evening, in our yard about 8 PM, a mature Bald Eagle killed a mature Canada Goose and spent about two hours devouring it! It was exciting, but scary. We also have 2 tame pet gray geese that we have had for years. They had to stay locked in their pen today. Too dangerous!
May 26, 2005 5:03 PM the Sea Hawk just came back from seeing J pod. Today they were around Andrews Bay and up north on the south end of Henry Island. Spread out all over eatting and at times cavorting. A number of Dall's porpoise gave a great show when they caught our bow wake and took a good long ride. It is HOT here today. Over 80 degrees! Nice to have a cool ocean breeze out on the boat.
We have been seeing whales just about daily. Just haven't written to you. L pod came back the other day. May 21 to be exact is when they were first spotted in the area.
May 5, 2005 The 1:00 boat just pulled in our Naturalist, reports that they watched a BIG male Stellar Sea Lion (1500 lbs) wrestling with and eating an huge OCTOPUS!
He was about 50 yards away. Tentacles were going every which way as he struggled to eat it.
May 4, 2005 On this tour we watched a Bald Eagle couple. The female caught a fish, flew back to the nest with the fish. The male stood by on a near by rock out crop.
We also saw a Harbor Seal struggling with a fish that it caught. The fish was quite large and the seal was having a difficult time with it since their teeth are not set up for cutting or chewing.
We never did see the seal actually eat the fish. Goose Island was loaded with sea birds as we passed by.
The transient whales were in the area, then zoomed off west past Victoria before we even caught a glimpse of them.
April 23, 2005 3:20 PM PST Captain Peter phoned in as he left 14 transient orcas off of Moresby Island.
Yes, we are seeing orcas!

Naturalist Derin on the Kittiwake departing from Roche Harbor. Giving guests the lay of the land.

A peek at naturalist prepping prior to a tour. Summer sun in the San Juan Islands.

A guest looks at whales off our boat on the west side of San Juan Island

The whales are a bit in the distance, but look closely. At this point there are about 14 whales in proximity to the boat.
