1. Whale Watch Naturalist / 1st Mate

Summary:
Boat naturalists are expected to educate, inform, and monitor all passengers during our 3-4 hour tour. Presenting information on whales (Resident, Transient, Off Shore, Gray, Humpback & Minke) marine mammals, birds, general ecology, the whale watching guidelines it's importance and history and other subjects, are the main focus during the tour. The naturalist is also the acting first mate on the vessel, responsible to help the captain in any way. Pre and post trip boat cleaning are also an important part of the tour.
Major Duties:
1. Perform duties as first mate to captain, which may include the safety talk prior to vessel leaving the dock
2. Educate and inform clients about Puget Sound wildlife, natural history, marine mammals, whales-Resident Orca, Transient Orca, Off Shore Orca, Humpbacks, Gray & Minke Whales, general ecology, and other flora and fauna
3. Monitor all passengers to assure they are comfortable, warm and safe, know where books, binoculars, blankets and jackets are and to keep guests well informed
4. Clean and prepare vessel pre and post trip
5. Responsible to continue learning new material on all local whales, marine mammals, birds and the Puget Sound area, in order to work towards becoming an expert in their field
Knowledge:
1. Background in Natural Sciences preferred. Studies in marine biology, geology, cetaceans, marine mammals, general ecology, and ornithology are preferred fields of study
2. Working knowledge of boats, and experience working on open water
3. 21 yrs or older, college education preferred with a background in marine sciences, biology, zoology, and outdoor education are all strong prerequisites
Skills:
1. People oriented, strong communication/public speaking skills, education experience or background are all characteristics we look for

2. Kayak Manager

Summary:
Oversee all kayaking related issues and manage staff and train guides assuring they are properly trained to provide a safe, educational and fun tour. Provide the guides with all the necessary gear and equipment to pull off a great tour. Make sure the dock environment is safe and solid. Schedule each guide for five days per week (if possible) and expect their commitment for those days. This is critical through the entire season until Labor Day. Be obsessed with safety and over train if necessary
Create a team atmosphere - fun, upbeat workplace and encourage team building activities outside of work. Provide services as a sea kayak guide three days per week and desk manager two days per week.
Duties:
1. Oversee all kayak guides and assist in their hiring
2. Schedule & train all kayak guides using SJS safety guidelines
3. Manage and assist in kayak maintenance equipped and prepare boats to sell
4. Manage, inventory and organize all gear and equipment related to kayaking
5. Bring all kayaks and gear out in the spring and return in the fall
6. Work closely with owners and desk manager to create a smooth operation
7. React to problems and emergencies to mitigate time lost
8. Maintain a critical parts inventory
9. Be the chief safety officer for sea kayaking

3. Sea Kayak Guide

Summary: Work directly with the kayak manager.
Kayak guides are expected to conduct 3 & 5-hour tours focusing on safety and comfort first. They are also expected to educate guests on a variety of subjects related to the San Juan Archipelago such as general ecology, marine invertebrates, natural history, whales, fishes, marine mammals and birds
Duties:
1. Conduct daily tours by kayak on designated routes
2. Give talks about Puget Sound area, general ecology, natural history, marine environment, flora & fauna & whales
3. Teach guests basics of sea kayaking and water safety. Assist guests into and out of their kayaks safely
4. Jump in to assist other staff members
5. Work under the direction of the kayak manager daily

4. Desk Manager for the Sales/Appointment Desk

Summary:
The Desk Supervisor is responsible for managing all the processes, desk and dock staff at both sales desks and interfacing with the admin. office. Responsibilities include opening and closing the desk and registers, tour sales, reservations, checking in guests, running the register, working with our wholesalers and groups to assure smooth inter-business processes, plus perform a public relations role at Roche Harbor. This person works with the Operations Manager or possibly lead kayak guide and lead captain on scheduling staff, inventory maintenance, and reports on other processes to assure a smooth running operation daily. Double checking that staff is aware of any unusual departure times. Looking ahead to avoid problems is also a duty.
Duties:
A. Monitor and manage effectively all sales desk processes and functions
1. Turning calls into sales. Booking multiple tours
2. Reservation taking
3. Register running and closing (2 closing bags daily)
4. Checking in guests
5. Checking in with wholesalers
6. managing desk and dock staff
7. Work with Kayak Manager and Lead Captain to schedule staff

The desk staff runs the daily functions of our desks; our main desk is at Roche Harbor. Duties include selling tours, opening - closing desk, checking in guests, taking reservations, and working effectively with guides, the desk supervisor, operation manager and other staff to assure smooth running tours and departures. 6. Dock Person/ Apprentice Guide

Summary:
The Dock person (AG) is responsible for daily preparation of the touring kayaks and rental equipment. Their primary responsibility is to prepare and maintain the equipment in order for the tours to run smoothly. This person must also work closely with the desk staff to track the equipment being used, and to plan equipment usage
Major Job Duties:
1. Prepare kayak equipment for tours daily
2. Help prepare the whale watch vessel for departures if necessary
3. Maintain and repair kayaks and other kayak related equipment
4. Instruct and send out rental kayaks
5. Back-up for appointment desk with phones & answering questions
6. Back-up kayak guide for cumbersome groups and odd numbered groups as an assistant guide

Oversee all whale watch Captains and Naturalists including scheduling and training. Summary: Perform daily tours. Captains are responsible for safe operation & safety features, basic maintenance, accurate logs, overseeing first mate/naturalist duties and setting a good example for wildlife viewing ethics &methods on the water. Season: Mid-April to October. Must be available Saturdays, Sundays and evenings.

(Our resident Orca whales and Chinook salmon are on the endangered species list. The federal and local governments have instituted a law that further protects our local whales. San Juan Safaris is serious about setting a good example for viewing etiquette. Job Description:
This is a professional full time, year-round position in eco tourism.
"Staff" refers to: Boat Captains, Kayak Guides, Desk Personnel, Dock Person, Boat Naturalists/First Mates
Summary:
Duties include, but not limited to:
- Recruit, interviewing, evaluating and hiring staff
- Supervise all staff
-Create a fun, upbeat work environment for our staff
- Schedule all staff
- Train or arranging training for all staff
-Test staff on their skills, both technical and natural history
- Evaluate staff one time per month
- Keep written records of any misconduct of staff
Major Duties:
- Oversee maintenance, cleaning and polishing of all kayaks and whale watch boats
- Maintain all whale watch boats in perfect condition at all times
- Develop a schedule and perform basic maintenance tasks on whale watch boats
- Follow up to make certain assignments are completed
- Put a system in place whereby the dock person can be trained as a kayak guide
- Meet and greet all "special groups" or assign a guide to do so. Get the group orientated, signed in, organized for their tour
- Meet at least once a week with owner
- Meet with boat, kayak and desk staff daily
- Perform a physical inventory of equipment the 1st of each month April - October
- Work appointment desk once a week for at least four hours
- Make certain the supplies for kayaks and boats are also on hand and re-ordered in a timely fashion
- Work hand in hand with desk supervisor to smoothly perform client services.
- Be literate in all U.S Cast Guard regulations and requirements to operate inspected vessels on inland bays and sounds
- Take whale watch boats through US Coast Guard inspections annually
- Be literate in Whale Watch Operators Association North West (WWOANW) guidelines for viewing whales and wildlife
- Stay current with issues of the WWOANW
- Assure that all captains are literate and compliant with all U.S Coast Guard, Department of Homeland Security and whale watching guidelines
- Develop yearly maintenance and replacement projects
- Schedule and oversee haul outs
- Schedule maintenance projects and upgrades
- The OM is also expected to physically come to their desk once a day to check their in box, email, phone messages and attend to tasks at hand with owners and administrative assistant
- Assist owners in program development, whale issues, local politics, marketing and public relations
- Update and review all job descriptions, emergency response lists, vessel manuals, operations manuals, staff manuals and process maps before the first of every new calendar year
- Make certain that staff complies with the above
-Read trade publications monthly and local newspaper weekly to stay current with industry issues
Safety officer: must be constantly watchful and alert to all safety issues related to operations. This includes equipment, safety drills, weather alerts and instruction, continued safety training and compliance. The OM is the first line of defense to all issues relating to safety.
- Check weather and relay wind or problems to staff daily during 'season'
Requirements:
Business background preferred, outgoing, people oriented, detail minded, mechanically inclined, responsible, mature, happy, good group speaking skills, good sea legs, 25 years or older.
College education with a background in business, marine science or zoology, a working knowledge of Orca whales, marine animals and birds in the Pacific Northwest. Have responsible environmental ethics, certified in First Aid and CPR, able to lift 50 pounds comfortably, at times 80 pounds and safety conscious. Have retail and managerial experience. 50 - 100 ton captain's license preferred and certified in kayak safety and rescue training preferred.
This person must be well organized, punctual, hard working, able to plan ahead avoiding last minute chaos, have the ability to be both firm and flexible.
Be available year-round (January - December) including Saturdays and Sunday with a 6-day workweek April - September and a 5-day work week October - March. Vacations to be taken in the off season only
Proficient in Word, Excel, internet and email programs.
