Mission Statement
We are knowledgeable in all aspects of our local environment and enthusiastic in sharing our knowledge in hopes of helping our guests develop a life-long love of wildlife and its habitat. Our priorities are safety, education and fun.
Company Description
Eco Tourism, Adventure Travel, Commercial Outfitter, Guide Service, Whale Watching and Wildlife Viewing Tours
San Juan Safaris is a small privately owned, well respected, well run company operating from this location since 1995, in the eco tourism business since 1977.
The company has approximately thirty staff members during season April - September and four staff members year-round. Our emphasis is on safety, guest service, wildlife viewing, respecting wildlife and its environment.
Our goal is to expose people to wildlife and their natural surroundings, give them a deeper understanding of what they are viewing. Our hope is that our guests will have a life-long memory to return home with, and then support wildlife and habitat in their everyday life.
Staff
Creating a team environment for our staff is of utmost importance in having a wonderful summer experience. Our staff members depend on each other to support each job function. Any one signing on with San Juan Safaris should understand that they will need to commit to working five days per week, June, July and August. By doing so, everyone will have a great summer.
We are looking for only the best outdoor educators, first mates and guides. We are outdoor professionals who bring that extra something to the tour that clients will not forget. The type of guests that we attract makes it exciting and satisfying to be a part of the team.
Because of the size of our company and the work environment that we have created, we are more like a big extended family. Staff members develop life-long friendships by being a part of our team. We assist in finding affordable housing for the summer. Most guides room together (which is half the fun) for about $300 per person per month.
Because we spend money and energy training staff, we are looking for people who plan to be with us at least 2 - 3 summers.
San Juan Island is one of the few places in the world where you can see killer whales on a regular basis. The orcas here in the islands are quite gregarious. The islands are beautiful and lend themselves to biking, hiking, birding, long walks, boating and kayaking. Staff usually has a volley ball game going and run together after work. 75% of our staff return.
If you are planning to work for us you will need to plan on living here on San Juan Island. Commuting to and from the island causes scheduling difficulties. We encourage our crew to immerse themselves in the eco-system and 'island living'. Usually staff rents a house and live together 3 - 5 per house. Most places do not accept pets. So, plan on leaving your dog or cat behind. In the past this has cost staffers $250 - $300 per month rent, plus food, etc.
Pro Deals For Staff
Some of the companies that we have pro deals with are: Northwest Kayaks, Northwest River Supply (NRS) Kokotat, Werner Paddles, Cascade Designs, Smith Sunglasses, Snap Dragon Designs, Kavu, Sierra Designs, Mountain Hardware, Yakima, Extrasport, Patagonia, just to name a few.
Resumes and Interviews:
We start accepting resumes after season in November. Follow-up phone calls will start being made in January. The best way to send it is via email with a cover letter, resume and references to: Fun@SanJuanSafaris.com .
Be certain that you have read thoroughly the job description you are applying for and uniform standards and have reviewed our entire web site.
How we pay our staff:
San Juan Safaris pays it's crew weekly according to a contracted compensation agreement. Most employees are paid an hourly wage with an additional $2 per hour bonus, when that employee finishes their contracted agreement date. We rely on our staff to stay through the entire season, which is rewarded by the $2 per hour bonus at the end of the season
Comments submitted to the United Nations Forum on Eco-Tourism 2002:
The mission of San Juan Safaris and other eco-tourism companies I have operated has been consistent over the years. I have continually merged my professional goals with my environmental concerns. The realization that I have had the rare opportunity to integrate my profession with my personal ideology has enabled me to maintain my enthusiasm even during the difficult periods of my career.
My greatest concerns center on the earth's inability to cope with the rapid human assault on its wildlife. Loss of habitat to commercial development coupled with human indifference towards the environment has deteriorated our quality of life, while allowing precious wildlife to slip into the history books.
My mission is to be a positive force in curbing these losses. Through the various activities we operate, I attempt to instill a sense of appreciation towards the total environment. I encourage the visitor to escape, if only temporarily, from their human made confines to experience a bonding with the earth on an intimate basis. Through a close and personal encounter with a wild place, I believe people can be made aware of their connection to the natural world. Their inner spirit can be reawakened and reconnected with the earth just as it once was prior to being severed by advanced civilization.
It is with this mission that I devote my professional energies. To me, eco-tourism is the marriage of an altruistic mission to an economic model! The union of mission and model produces "sustainable tourism" which is critical to providing hope for many species and ecosystems throughout the world. Important also is that a career in ecotourism provides a platform for "responsible capitalism". Encouraging and promoting responsible capitalism is essential if we are to maintain a viable, biologically diverse planet in the future.
Sincerely, Bill Wright, owner/operator of San Juan Safaris
