Gateway to the San Juan Islands
Named for a woman called Anna Cortez.
Anacortes is often called the “Gateway to the San Juans”, because the vast majority of people traveling to the islands will pass through Anacortes on their way to the Washington State Ferry terminal.
Located on Fidalgo Island, Anacortes has all the charm you would expect of a small waterfront community, including a vibrant main street with bakeries, brew pubs, artist galleries, antique stores and historic buildings.
Throughout the spring and summer months Anacortes hosts a variety of outdoor fairs and markets. Incorporated in 1891, Anacortes’ early economic development centered on the fishing and lumber industries. Oil refining followed in the 1950’s, with two companies (Texaco and Shell Oil) building refineries on lands just outside the town limits.
The refineries continue to be the predominant employer in the region, with yacht construction and tourism also playing important roles in the local economy.
